Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding Honors Winners

Doha, The board of trustees of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding announced today the winners in a ceremony held at the St. Regis Doha.

Chairman of the Award’s Board of Trustees Dr. Hassan Al Naama stressed that on the award’s role in establishing a sense of understanding between civilizations. He expressed his thanks to HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani for introducing this award.

Representatives of the winners as well as a number of guests gave speeches to mark the occasion. They expressed their appreciation to the role of State of Qatar in supporting communication between civilizations .

After the speeches, HE Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem Al-Thani honored the three winners from each award category. For translation from Arabic into a language other than English, Salvador Pena Martin won for his translation of 1001 nights. For translation into Arabic from a language other than English, Saleh Almani won for his translation of Diez Mujeres (Ten Women). For Translation from Arabic into English, Michael Cooperson for his translation of Virtues of the Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal.

The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding was founded in Doha, Qatar (2015). The total prize money of the award is one million US dollar divided evenly on five categories. The winner earns $100,000, the second and third earn $60,000 and $40,000 respectively.
