Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Strikes off Solomon Islands

Sydney, A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the South Pacific nation of the Solomon Islands on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 10:04 am local time at a depth of 33 kilometers some 70 kilometers west of Kirakira, the same region where several large tremors struck last month, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the Solomon’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) said it had not received any damage reports from the remote area. The Solomon Islands are part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone of tectonic activity known for frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions.
