Al-Attiyah: Syria Facing Biggest Challenge Since Colonial Era

Doha, November 08 (QNA) – HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al-Attiyah said that Qatar’s hosting of the Syrian opposition meeting stems from the firmed stances of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in supporting countries seeking their legitimate rights.
Addressing the meeting at Sheraton Doha on Thursday, HE  Dr. Al Attiyah stressed that Qatar’s stance toward the Syrian uprising will always be the same, noting that HH the Emir reiterated that position three days ago at the Qatari Shura Council.
Al-Attiyah added that Syria is going through an ordeal and its people are coming up against a challenge they did not face since colonial times.
HE the minister of state warned that the “enemy of the Syrian people” does not and will not shy away from shedding blood if the opposition remains divided, with the Security Council failing to support the Syrian people.
HE the minister of State for Foreign Affairs stressed that the majority of the international community stands by the Syrian people side in claiming their legitimate rights, pointing to the fact that  many countries participated in this conference.
He warned that the issue requires the opposition’s unity and solidarity, to enable the international community to reach out for the Syrian people. Division among the opposition will feed the arrogance of the regime and cost the Syrian people more lives and assets, HE Dr. Al Attiyah said addressing the opposition leaders meeting.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also delivered a speech at the opening session of the meeting of the Syrian opposition in which he confirmed his country’s continued support to the people and the opposition of Syria.
In this regard, Davutoglu urged the opposition with all its components to unite, and called on the international community to provide more support for the Syrian people and opposition. (END)
