Kerry Says North Korean Actions Raise Tensions

Washington, , Jumada II 9, 1437, Mar 18, 2016, SPA — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, reacting to reports of a North Korean launch of a ballistic missile, urged the reclusive country to halt provocations that he said raise tensions in the region, and reiterated that Washington is committed to the defense of its allies in East Asia.
“We have seen reports that North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan.  We are closely monitoring the situation on the Korean Peninsula,” Kerry said in a statement overnight.
“We call again on North Korea to refrain from actions that further raise tensions in the region and focus instead on taking concrete steps toward fulfilling its international commitments and obligations,” Kerry wrote.
“The United States remains steadfast in its commitments to the defense of its allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan.  We will continue to coordinate closely with our allies and partners in the region,” the statement said.
