MME, Carrefour take the lead on International Plastic Bag Free Day

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and Carrefour Qatar announced a range of initiatives on Tuesday as a call to action inspired by the International Plastic Bag Free Day. The aim is to encourage customers to reduce their use of single-use plastic bags for the sake of a more sustainable environment in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The MME will be supporting Carrefour as it marks the International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3 (Wednesday) by removing single-use plastic bags from its check-out counters across Qatar while offering each customer a reusable bag as an eco-friendly alternative. The fruits and vegetables section at the stores will also replace single-use plastic bags with paper bags.

Nasser Abdulrahman al Sarami, director of Public Relations Department at the MME, said: The initiative is in line with the ministry’s commitment to supporting the efforts for the protection of the environment. This is also the responsibility of all ministries, organisations, companies and individuals. It complements the ministry’s efforts to preserve land, sea, air and the nature overall, as well as its daily efforts in terms of waste management and recycling of different forms of waste.
