UAE, Norway celebrate 40 years of cross-cultural connection.

An exhibition titled Norway-UAE: +40 Years of Culture recently opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with the attendance of Zaki Nusseibeh, Minister of State and Jens Eikaas, Norwegian Ambassador to the UAE.

The exhibition was previously on display at MESH The Nordic Creator’s Community in Oslo.

Taking the Norwegian Seamen’s Centre in Dubai as its focal point, the documentary exhibition tells the story of the Norwegian community in the UAE and the cultural ties between the two nations through family photographs, videos, historical documents, art works and archival materials.

The Norwegian Seaman’s Centre, a social, cultural and religious centre which has served the Scandinavian expatriate community in the UAE since 1976, was built on land donated by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai from 1958 1990.

When the Centre first opened its doors it was one of the only wooden structures in the Arabian Peninsula. The building was traditionally pre-fabricated in wood in Norway, shipped in pieces to the UAE and constructed in the Oud Metha neighbourhood where it is in operation until today. The stories associated with this site and those of the individuals whose lives it was a part of demonstrates a unique cross-cultural connection between the two countries and the long-standing importance of tolerance, hospitality and diversity in the UAE.

169 abandoned vehicles removed

The Joint Committee for Removing Abandoned Vehicles in the country removed 169 abandoned vehicles from different areas in the Doha and Al Rayyan municipalities over the past few days.

The committee maintained active co-ordination with the municipalities concerned to prevent the spread of the phenomenon of abandoned vehicles due to its various negative impacts, in particular distorting the beauty and general ambiance of public places in violation of Law No 18 of 2017 on Public Hygiene.

Vehicles and equipment from both the MME and Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) took part in the process of removing such vehicles and transporting them to the designated impound yards in Mesaimeer and Al Mashaf. The impounded vehicles remain there for six months, after which the matter is referred to the General Directorate of Traffic in order to cancel the road permit registration of such vehicles. This is in preparation for selling them to specialist companies as scrap.

Samba powers to second place in Monaco

Monaco, Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba made a roaring return from injury, finishing second in the men’s 400m at the Diamond League event in Monaco on Friday.

Samba, who had set a personal best of 44.60 seconds in the discipline in South Africa to kick-start his build-up to the World Championships, ran a 45-second lap at the Stade Louis II to finish behind Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas, who won the event in 44.51 seconds.

I’m so happy with that,” 23-year-old Samba said.

I’m just back from injury. I missed a few weeks but it’s all good now. I felt like I got my rhythm back,” added the 400m hurdles Asian Games gold medallist and the Asian champion.

The World Championships will be held at Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium come September.

Samba won the 400m flat in Pretoria, before unsurprisingly running away with 400m hurdles gold at the Asian Championships in April, an event that served as a test event for the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019.

Last year, Samba was unbeaten in six Diamond League events even becoming only the second man after the world record holder Kevin Young of the US to dip under 47 seconds in the 400m hurdles event, winning in Paris in a time of 46.98 seconds.

In ominous fashion, he opened his Diamond League season in Shanghai with a 47.27 second effort to win the 400m hurdles gold before injury forced a break.
