Ashghal opens the Tilted Interchange tunnel to traffic in each direction

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announces the opening of the Tilted Interchange tunnel to traffic coming from Al Rayyan towards Al Gharrafa as part of Khalifa Avenue project starting Sunday 8 September 2019, in coordination with General Directorate of Traffic. Ashghal had opened last Sunday part of the Tilted Interchange tunnel to traffic for road users coming from Al Gharrafa towards Al Rayyan.

The Public Works Authority is currently working on improving Al Gharrafa Street and Huwar Street and upgrading it to a two-levelled road, including four signalized intersections above the tunnel in length of 2.7Km.

The new Tilted Interchange Tunnel has four lanes in each direction to accommodate more than 16,000 vehicles per hour upon its full opening by the third quarter of 2020, as for the at grade road, it will have four intersections serving all facilities, such as Sidra Hospital, Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Library.

The new opening will reduce traffic congestion in the area, especially on the Tilted Intersection, as the new tunnel will provide a free traffic flow for road users coming from Al Duhail and Al Gharrafa heading towards Al Rayyan, providing a direct connectivity between the areas as well as reducing travel time between the neighboring areas.

Road users on the existing Al Gharrafa Street going towards Al Rayyan will have to take the right exit towards Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange and make a U-Turn to reach Al Luqta Street and then take the exit to the new tunnel.

Traffic diversion

In order to allow the opening of the new tunnel and accelerate the completion of the remaining works at the Tilted Interchange, Ashghal will implement a temporary traffic diversion.

From Al Rayyan to Makkah Street

The access to Makkah Street will be closed for Huwar street road users coming from Al Rayyan, instead road users should use Al Jethouaiya street access

From Al Rayyan to Doha and Dukhan

Road users on Huwar Street, going through the new tunnel will be able to take the exit ramp towards the new Tilted Interchange and follow the directional signs to their destinations.

Khalifa Avenue Milestones

The Public Works Authority has completed the asphalt works on Al Luqta main road which consists of four lanes in each direction from the west of Tilted Intersection until east of Al Wajbah Interchange.

In addition to the main road opening, Ashghal had opened the two way parallel service roads which connects major facilities such as Qatar Foundation, Sidra Medial and Qatar National Convention Centre.

The Public Works Authority has opened important sections of Khalifa Avenue Project, such as significant sections of the vital three-level Bani Hajer interchange. The complex interchange which replaced the previous roundabout accommodates approximately 1,500 vehicles per hour and provides free traffic flow movements and is a key access to Dukhan Road, Al Luqta Street and Al Rayyan Road, as well as the residential areas around such as Bani Hajer, Al Rayyan, Gharrafat Al Rayyan and Al Gharrafa. The interchange is comprised of two bridges, two underpasses, three ramps (right turn exits) and two loops to provide connectivity in all directions. Upon completion, the interchange will boast a unique 300-meter multipurpose bridge, the first of its kind in Qatar, along with cycle and pedestrian lanes.

It is important to note that Ashghal has completed 91% of construction works on Khalifa Avenue Project which is scheduled to be completed in Q3 2020. Upon completion, the project will deliver approximately 11.6 km of dual carriageway with four lanes in each direction besides seven major interchanges, service roads, along sections of the road, in addition to cycle, pedestrian and camel paths which will be on the south side of Al Luqta Street.
