THE Ministry of Municipality and Environment holds regional workshop on food security

THE Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Department of Agricultural Research, in collaboration with the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, organised a regional workshop on food security, on Monday.

The three-day workshop brings together experts, researchers and specialists from the two sides in the fields of agricultural and animal research, food security, biomedicine and environmental security.

In his speech at the opening session, Director of the Agricultural Research Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Hamad Al-Shamari stressed the importance of the workshop because it provided an opportunity for researchers and experts participating from different bodies in the country and external organisations to exchange information and experiences in how to achieve food security and control of brucellosis, as well as ways to combat bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and ways to protect the environment.

Mr.Al-Shamari pointed out that the workshop comes within the framework of the Government?s keenness to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030, by maintaining the pace of economic and social development and protecting the environment for future generations.

At the first session of the workshop, which focused on food security, Professor Anthony Fox of the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) gave an overview of the APHA and the role of Agency?s reference laboratory in the control of brucellosis disease, and the protection of animal and plant wealth in his country, working together with the British Government to achieve animal and plant security.

For her part, Sarah Al Malki from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment?s Department of Food Security discussed Qatar?s national strategy regarding

She said that the strategy was accelerated following the unjust blockade that was imposed on Qatar in 2017. She gave an overview of the challenges that faced the strategy and how the country overcame those challenges. She stressed on the importance of diversifying importation sources and supporting local production.

She said that the State has also made an effort to enhance local supply of goods and focus on strategic goods such as meats, milk, rice and sugar.
