iGA celebrates GIS Day with showcase of soil mapping project

Manama, The Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA), represented by its Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Directorate, celebrated GIS Day with a showcase of its soil mapping project. The event, held under the patronage of the Minister of Oil, His Excellency Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, was organized by Tatweer Petroleum and Microcenter Group, which is ESRI Global GIS’s agent in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The event was attended by local and international experts in the field.

The annual forum is an opportunity to exchange experiences, learn about the latest technologies in the field, and increase the awareness of specialists about these systems and the benefits they offer. iGA’s presentation highlighted the record time in which the soil mapping project was completed by a group of its young Bahraini specialists. The system provides information and mapping not available through field surveys alone and has also reduced costs through its use of local resources.

The project collects, analyzes and disseminates geographical data on soil in the Kingdom and provides specialized maps, which will be even more detailed in the future, through the analysis of satellite images gained through remote sensing techniques and field surveys, which are then compared with the reality on the ground. The system supports agricultural production, which is an industry vital to the Kingdom’s food security, and also helps the construction industry improve its safety standards.

The project is provided by the iGA in line with its policy to empower government agencies with geospatial information, which is made available through the national geographic database of the Kingdom.

Other geographical systems offered by the iGA include its Benayat e-building system which supports the issuance of building permits for all types of real estate projects with built up areas larger than 50 square meters, and Tasareeh, which issues infrastructure project permits.
