Bahrain attends WUF 10 in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (DERASAT) Board of Trustees’ Chairman Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa attended the 10th World Urban Forum (WUF 10).

The six-day symposium opened yesterday (February 8) under the patronage of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and UAE Armed Forces Deputy Supreme Committee His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.

The United Nations (UN) Human Settlements Programme is organising the (WUF 10) in Abu Dhabi under the theme: Cities of Opportunities, Connecting Culture and Innovation.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa addressed a discussion session which focused on strengthening partnerships in the field of sustainable development in the Arab region and North Africa on “The role of think tanks in sustainable urban development”.

Think tanks are unique in focusing their researchers on their specializations all the time, following up on current developments, unlike ministries’ employees who carry out the executive tasks that prevent them from being able to read and absorb the latest scientific developments in various fields, he said. He said that there are 103 think tanks in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, adding that none deals with urban planning issues.

Sustainable urban development suffers from the lack of data available to researchers and policymakers, due to the shortage of human and financial resources allocated to it throughout the region he said.

He stressed cooperation between DERASAT and the United Nations-UNDP and Human Settlements Programme to provide funding for the preparation of the State of the Arab Cities 2020 report, adding that researchers from the region and outside have joined forces to ensure the application of best practices in view of the specificity of the region.
