Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for International Affairs meets WMO Regional Office Director

Manama, The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, received here today the Regional Office of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Dr. Hisham Abdul Ghani Musa.

Dr. Shaikh Abdullah praised the fruitful and constructive cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and WMO, and commended the organisation’s distinguished efforts in helping the world, maximizing resources, and protecting the environment.

The Undersecretary reviewed the progress made in the field of climate improvement and confrontation of global warming in the Kingdom of Bahrain which has undertaken comprehensive practical measures in the environmental field.

He noted in this regard the qualitative efforts exerted by the Supreme Council for the Environment, Headed by His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Personal Representative of His Majesty the King.

Dr. Shaikh Abdullah said the Kingdom of Bahrain attached great importance to meteorology at a very early date with the establishment of the first climate station for recording temperatures, air pressure, and precipitation at the beginning of the last century, precisely in 1902.

It is constantly updating the management of Meteorology administration, providing it with advanced equipment and novel weather forecasting techniques in line with international standards and fast-paced technological developments.

He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain has enacted many laws on protection of the environment, and implemented a host of national programmes and community campaigns aimed at raising awareness of climate change and contributing to reducing harmful activities and conduct.

Dr. Shaikh Abdullah stressed the importance of enhancing the existing cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and WMO to support adaptability efforts to climate change, mitigating its effects, and raising the capacity of early warning systems to improve disaster risk management, in addition to providing high-quality weather forecast, integrated and sustainable climate and hydrological services.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs said that the Kingdom of Bahrain, as an active and responsible international member, supports the initiatives and procedures of the World Meteorological Organisation, in order to address climate and environmental challenges, noting that Bahrain is hosting the regional office of the Meteorological Organisation, which provides better services and serves a wide and important range of mutual cooperation.

Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa called for capacity building and exchange of experiences between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the World Meteorological Organisation, as well as working together to pay attention to data, research and applications, qualification and training of national cadres, and access to modern systems.

This is, he said, in an effort to secure the safety of air, maritime navigation and land transport, to confront climate change, desertification and provide weather forecast, due to the latter being a cornerstone in many development projects, and various humanitarian and environmental activities.

Dr. Hisham Abdul Ghani expressed his pride in the growing partnership between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the World Meteorological Organisation, praising the facilities provided by the Kingdom to the regional office, to carry out its various tasks and activities, wishing the Kingdom of Bahrain further progress and prosperity.
