5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Maca, Peru

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Maca region in Peru without immediate news of human or material losses.

In a statement, the US Geological Survey said that the quake occurred nine kilometers southeast of the Maca region at a depth of ten kilometers.

On Monday, the Pucallpa region in northern Peru was hit by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake without causing human or material damage.

Peru is exposed yearly to at least 400 earthquakes felt by the population due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a point of seismic activity that extends along the western coast of the South American continent.
