The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) organised the 16th race meeting in the 2022-23 season at the Al Rayyan Racecourse turf track on Thursday, 1 December. The nineth and feature event was the Sawda Natheel Stakes Cup, a 1200m contest for 2YO+ Thoroughbred Fillies and Mares. Following the feature event of the day, trainer Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki and jockey Tomas Lukasek were in the winners’ enclosure together for the second time as they teamed up with the Noora Racing Limited-owned Al Ghariyah (GB) (Dutch Art x Figment) to win Cup by a neck. It was the trainer’s third winner on the day. The Al Azraq Stable-owned and Mohammed Ghazali-trained Angelic Queen (IRE) (Anjaal) was the close runner-up and was ridden by Lukas Delozier. The Al Hajaj Stud-owned and Hamad Al Jehani-trained Zwelela (FR) (Toronado) was only a further half length behind in third under Hugo Besnier.

Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.

Katibat Al Galayel

Earlier on the day, the same trainer-jockey duo of Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki and Tomas Lukasek started the proceedings picking up where they left off the day before, winning the opener, a Maiden for 3–6YO Local Purebred Arabians with Katibat Al Galayel (QA) (Alam Al Khalediah x Thebat Al Uraiq) winning the 1500m race by a length for owner and breeder Ali Mohammed Rashid Ali Al Madheed.

Red Storm

The Al Jeryan Stud-owned Red Storm (IRE) (Night Of Thunder x Scatter Dice) got off the mark at the fourth time of asking as the 3YO gelding, under jockey Szczepan Mazur, won the second race, a 1750m Handicap (0-75) for 3YO+ Thoroughbreds, by a length and a quarter for trainer M.H.K Al Attiyah.

Qate’e

In the 1750m Handicap (0-75) for 3YO+ Local Thoroughbreds, the Injaaz Stud-owned Qate’e (QA) (Holy Roman Emperor x Cyber Star) showed a great attitude to stay on powerfully and get up in the shadow of the post in the third race. Under jockey Ronan Thomas, the 7YO got the better of Al Khor Surprise (QA) (Abide With Me) by a neck for trainer Jihad El Ahmad.

Mubadir

The 1500m Handicap (0-85) for 3YO+ Local Purebred Arabians saw Mubadir (QA) (Majd Al Arab x Al Mubdiaa) completing a quick-fire double, in the fourth race, for owner Injaaz Stud and trainer Jihad El Ahmad as the 5YO scored a comfortable two-length win with Alberto Sanna in the saddle.

Just Wonder

The 1400m Handicap (70-90) for 3YO+ Thoroughbreds saw an exciting finish, with three horses battling right the way to the line, but it was the Jassim Bin Ali Al Attiyah-owned Just Wonder (GB) (Siyouni x Wonderstruck), who prevailed with a sustained gallop under Carlos Henrique to hold off the charge of Inde (FR) (Olympic Glory) and Coefficiente (GB) (Siyouni) by a head and a further short head, completing a double on the day, in the fifth race, for trainer Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki

Akmar

The following race, a 2000m Handicap (75-95) for 3YO+ Purebred Arabians, had a similar thrilling finish with another three horses battling in the last strides. Eventually, the Mohammed Nasser Al Naimi-owned and Hadi Al Ramzani-trained Akmar (FR) (No Risk Al Maury x Safa) under Soufiane Saadi, managed to get the better of Alsaher (FR) (Mared Al Sahra) and Khattab De Faust (FR) (Mared Al Sahra) by a head and a further short head.

Shgarde

In the seventh race, the Sharida Bin Nasser Bin Sharida Al Kaabi-owned Shgarde (US) (AF AlBahar x Dormania CS) returned to winning ways quickly for trainer Mohamed Khaled Elahmed as the 4YO colt won the 1100m Conditions for 3YO+ Purebred Arabians by almost a length, completing a double on the day for jockey Alberto Sanna.

Mister Staple

The Al Hajaj Stud-owned Mister Staple (IRE) (U S Navy Flag x Media Luna) continued his good career scoring for the second time in his third outing in Qatar.
