Foreign Minister participates in Arab League extraordinary meeting

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, participated in the Arab League’s extraordinary session, which was held today at the Arab League headquarters, in Cairo, to discuss the Syrian crisis.

The meeting was chaired by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the Chairman of the current session of the Arab League Ministerial Council. It was attended by the Arab Foreign Ministers and the Arab League Secretary General.

A resolution was issued affirming the renewed commitment of the Arab countries to preserving Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability, based on the Arab League Charter and its principles. It emphasized the importance of continuing and intensifying the Arab efforts aimed at helping Syria to overcome the crisis and end the suffering of the Syrian people over the past years.

The resolution is in concordance with the joint Arab interest and fraternal relations binding the Arab peoples, including the Syrian one, given their historical contribution to the Arab civilization and culture.

The resolution affirmed the need to take practical and effective steps to gradually resolve the crisis, according to the step-by-step principle and in line with the Security Council resolution 2254. It asserted continuity of the steps that allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in need in Syria, in accordance with the mechanisms adopted by the Security Council resolutions.

The resolution stipulated the approval of the resumption of the participation of delegations of the Syrian government in the meetings of the Arab League Council and all its affiliated organizations and agencies as of May 7, 2023. It also stipulated the formation of a ministerial contact committee comprising the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and the Arab League Secretary General to follow up on the implementation of the statement of Amman and continuous direct dialogue with the Syrian government to reach a comprehensive solution to the crisis.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also participated in the Arab League extraordinary meeting on the tragic situation in Sudan. A resolution was issued emphasizing the necessity of full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and non-interference in its internal affairs. It stressed dealing with the current crisis as an internal Sudanese affair, affirming the importance of preserving the Sudanese national institutions and preventing their collapse. It underscored the significance of preventing any external interference in the Sudanese affairs in order to avoid fueling the conflict and threatening regional peace and security.

The resolution also stipulated the formation of an Arab ministerial contact group comprising the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Secretary General of the Arab League to undertake communication with the Sudanese parties, influential countries regionally and internationally and the relevant international organisations to reach a settlement to the crisis, a full and permanent ceasefire and address the causes of the crisis in a way that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people for stability and security.

The resolution also stipulated that the contact group coordinate with the General Secretariat and the international relief organizations to provide urgent humanitarian and medical support to citizens and displaced persons in Sudan, as well as to those seeking safe haven in neighboring countries.

The Bahraini delegation participating in the meeting comprised Bahraini Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal, Foreign Ministry Affairs Director General, Ambassador Talal Abdulsalem Al-Ansari and Head of the Arab and African Affairs Sector Ahmed Mohammed Al-Terifi.
