HE Dr. Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz bin Turki Al-Subaie, Minister of Municipality, has issued a ministerial resolution on sorting solid waste.
The resolution required corporates, institutions, commercial and residential complexes, hospitality facilities, commercial, industrial and public stores and buildings occupants (except family homes) to make available and use a sufficient number of containers, in order to preserve the waste resulting from their activities, sort and keep it in two types of containers according to the following specifications:
1. Recyclable waste containers – Blue bins.
2. Residual (organic) waste containers – Grey bins.
The resolution also defines solid waste as a non-hazardous solid waste resulting from various activities, including two types:
1. Recyclable waste: Waste that can be recycled or re-processed, such as papers and plastic, steel and glass containers.
2. Residual waste: Waste, trash and material to be processed and destroyed, such as food and cleaning residues,
The resolution provided for placing a large label on the recyclable containers with the phrase (Recyclable Waste) marked with a color other than container itself.
Furthermore, the resolution required corporates, institutions, commercial and residential complexes, hospitality facilities, commercial, industrial and public stores and buildings occupants (except family homes) to replace their non-conforming waste containers or increase the number of waste units, whenever the competent municipality authority notified them that the volume of waste is surpassing the number of available container units or that the resulting waste leading to hazards on public/ environmental health.
Under the provisions of the resolution, the competent department in the Ministry (General Cleanliness Department) shall coordinate with the relevant authorities to monitor the application of this resolution.
