NIHR participates in international conference on climate change and human rights

Doha, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, has participated in the international conference on “Climate Change and Human Rights”.

The two-day conference was organised by Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Arab League and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

The conference discussed several issues facing humanity regarding climate change and human rights, the implications and obligations, and the role played by the United Nations and its agencies in advancing climate action based on human rights.

The conference called on countries and stakeholders to work together to ensure that the human rights law, as well as its principles and standards, are the cornerstone of governments’ efforts to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change to reduce losses and damages?

It also recommended studying ways to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects. in an ambitious, inclusive and rights-based manner, in line with the 16th Sustainable Development Goal.
