Riyadh: The Transport General Authority (TGA) celebrated more than 2,100 Saudi sailors serving on over 420 ships within the Saudi maritime fleet, in honor of World Seafarers Day, established by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and observed annually on June 25, TGA said in a news release.
The authority highlighted that this celebration recognizes the efforts of all maritime workers and emphasizes the importance of their safety. It also reinforces the prominent role of the Saudi maritime fleet, which holds the top regional position.
The authority pointed out key initiatives supported by the Kingdom to empower and support the maritime sector. Among these is the GloLitter initiative, aimed at helping developing countries prevent and reduce marine plastic litter from the maritime transport and fisheries sectors. Another initiative is GloNoise, which seeks to build a global partnership between stakeholders and developing countries to address underwater noise reduction. Additionally, th
e IMOCARES project focuses on adopting technical solutions for transport and ports to reduce emissions from the maritime shipping sector.
Saudi Arabia secured membership in the IMO Council for the 2024-2025 term, receiving 143 votes from member states during the elections held in London last year. The IMO sets international standards to ensure the safety and security of maritime transport and aims to reduce pollution from ships, supporting initiatives to protect the marine environment and natural resources.
Saudi Arabia’s strategic location connects it to three continents, and the national transport and logistics strategy aims to solidify the Kingdom’s position and pivotal role on the global stage, establishing it as a world-class logistics hub.
