India votes in last phase of massive, 6-week elections


Firozpur/Kolkata, Indians voted in searing summer heat on Saturday in the final phase of the world’s biggest election.

More than 100 million people are registered to vote for 57 seats across eight states and federal territories in the seventh phase of the election, including in Modi’s constituency in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi.

Public exit polls, banned during the six weeks of voting, are expected to be released after voting ends at 6:30 p.m. (1300 GMT).

Election results are to be announced on Tuesday.

Social Development Ministry participates in GCC meeting for empowering persons with disabilities


Riyadh, Sadiq Sahwan, Rehabilitation Welfare Director at the Ministry of Social Development, participated in the second meeting of the working group tasked with amending the texts of the unified law for empowering persons with disabilities in the GCC countries.

The meeting was organised by the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The meeting discussed topics and amendments to the unified law to enhance the rights of persons with disabilities and empower them in multiple areas, including enhancing education and vocational training, ensuring appropriate job opportunities, health care, access to public services, and community participation rights.

The meeting also exchanged expertise, insights, challenges and opportunities to deliver positive change for people with disabilities.

It emphasised the importance of coordination between member states, to exchange expertise and unify efforts made in this field.

Oil Minister meets ARC-WH Director


Manama, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Oil and Environment Minister and the Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, received Rashad Faraj Director of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage ARC-WH.

The minister praised the role of the ARC-WH in preserving Bahraini and Arab heritage, emphasising the importance of increasing cooperation and joint work between the Supreme Council for Environment and the ARC-WH to achieve common goals in the field of preserving Arab heritage.

The meeting discussed topics of common interest, especially in implementing environmental initiatives and programmes focusing on biodiversity.

For his part, Faraj lauded the efforts and achievements of the Kingdom locally, regionally and internationally in the fields of preserving the environment and heritage.

AGU graduation ceremony to be held under the patronage of HRH Crown Prince and Prime Minister

Manama, June 1 (BNA):The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) will host its graduation ceremony (2023-2024), under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on June 23.

The batch includes 279 graduates, of which 182 graduates are from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences and 97 are graduates of the College of Graduate Studies.

Dr Saad bin Saud Al Fuhaid, AGU President, commended the support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to AGU.

Dr. Al Fuhaid expressed his gratitude to HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for his patronage of the AGU ceremony, which reflects the government’s support for education.

Dr. Al Fuhdaid also expressed his appreciation to Bahrain for hosting the headquarters of the AGU since 1980 and its continuous support, which contributed to making the university one of the
most prominent joint projects for GCC citizens over the past 44 years.

Dr. Al Salloum, the new Vice President of WOAH Council


Manama, Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, the Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, congratulated Dr. Fajr Al Salloum, Director of the Animal Health Directorate at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, on her election as Vice President of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Council.

The minister expressed his pride for this unprecedented achievement.

Al Mubarak praised the efforts of Dr. Al Salloum as a former member of the Regional Commission for the Middle East, noting that her election for this position represents the first Arab membership in the Middle East to act as Vice-President of the WOAH Council since its establishment 100 years ago.

Dr. Al Salloum was elected by the WOAH World Assembly with a vote of 107-114.

iGA wins WSIS Award for revamped national portal


Manama, The Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) received the Champions Award during the the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), recognising the revamped National Portal, bahrain.bh, from among more than 1,000 submissions globally under the eGovernment category as part of “ICT Applications: Benefits in All Aspects of Life categories.”

Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, the iGA Chief Executive, expressed pride in the achievement, highlighting the directives of General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Information and Communication Technology (MCICT), to enhance the National Portal bahrain.bh and digital channels, improve access to government services, and enhance user experience.

Al Qaed underscored the iGA’s mission to continuously develop eServices since the portal’s launch in 2007, in line with technological advancements and the needs of citizen and resident. Following several development stages, the portal o
ffers information on 1,300+ government services, 680+ eServices, seamless electronic integration with more than 40 public and private entities, with monthly visits that surpassed 1.5 million visits.

The National Portal’s key features include user profile ‘Personalisation’, a favourite eServices list, ‘Government Notifications’ for various government entities, a transaction history spanning six months, and a smart assistant ‘Chatbot’. The portal supports multiple payment methods, including BenefitPay and Apple Pay, and provides secure payment options through a “Saved Cards” feature, enabling users to easily store bank or credit cards.

Al Qaed praised the portal users, citizens and residents, for their significant contributions towards this achievement, emphasising their cooperation with the iGA and their feedback and suggestions through various interactive channels.

During the WSIS 2024 awarding ceremony that took place in Geneva, Switzerland, the Champions award was received on behalf of the Information an
d eGovernment Authority by a representative from the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

WSIS is an annual event held in Geneva by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to spotlight digital projects that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is co-organised by ITU, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Tourism Minister: Chinese market one of key target markets in Tourism Strategy 2022-2026


Manama, Fatima bint Jaffar Al Sairafi, the Minister of Tourism, emphasised the importance of the deep-rooted historical Bahraini-Chinese ties and cooperation in various domains, including the economic and tourism sectors.

Gulf Air, the national carrier of Bahrain, launched direct flights to Guangzhou and Shanghai, coinciding with the state visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the President of the current session of the Arab Summit, to the People’s Republic of China and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Al Sairafi said the Chinese market is a key target market in Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, highlighting the significant tourism opportunities it presents for the Kingdom and the region.

She underscored the ongoing efforts to collaborate with the private sector in developing tourism packages tailored to Chinese tourists.

The Ministry of Tourism and Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) are studying Chinese tourists’
interests and culture to create tourism experiences that will attract more Chinese visitors to Bahrain.

She added that BTEA recently signed a partnership with tourism offices in China to promote the Kingdom in the Chinese market.

Additionally, the BTEA organised a workshop for over 100 travel agencies, destination managers, and hotel establishments to learn about the Chinese market and the needs of Chinese tourists.

Paris, Team Victorious its success in Europe after it recorded a new achievement by winning the Florence, France, 120 km race for the second consecutive time.

His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs, emphasised that this achievement underscores the status of Bahraini endurance in European competitions.

HH Shaikh Nasser added that the team’s success reflects the continuous progress and advancement of Bahraini endurance on a global stage, demonstrating the support for equestrian sports by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the government led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, and Prime Minister.
