US files complaint against China over alleged aluminium subsidies

Washington, Rabi’II 14, 1438, January 12, 2017, SPA — The United States on Thursday filed a complaint
with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China over alleged
subsidies to aluminium producers, according to dpa.
The complaint alleges that China gives its aluminium industry an unfair advantage through underpriced loans and other illegal government subsidies.
Such policies have disadvantaged US manufacturers and contributed to the global glut in aluminium, steel and other sectors, the White House said in a statement.
“We’re taking action to protect the workers – at home and around the world – who are hurt every day by these policies,” the statement said.
President-elect Donald Trump has spoken forcefully about standing up for the US when it comes to global trade, but the new administration’s plans would not be beneficial to the US, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. “They would consider imposing high tariffs and building walls in ways that economists have said would be damaging to workers – US workers – bad for US businesses, bad for entrepreneurs and bad for the US economy,” Earnest said.
The complaint said certain Chinese producers receive the subsidies through artificially cheap loans and through artificially low prices for coal, electricity and raw materials needed in aluminium production.
These alleged actions raise concerns that China is not acting consistently with its obligations under the WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, the US trade representative said in a news release.
The announcement marks the 16th trade enforcement challenge the Obama administration has launched against China at the WTO, the US trade representative said.
There was no immediate response to an email seeking reaction from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.

U.S. Jobless Claims Rise Slightly

Washington, Rabi’II 14, 1438, Jan 12, 2017, SPA — Slightly more Americans filed for unemployment insurance benefits in the first week of the year, but still came in lower than expected, the government said Thursday.
The Labor Department reported that initial claims increased by 10,000 in the week-ended January 7 compared to the prior week, to 247,000, adjusted for seasonal factors.
But after the big drop in the final week of 2016, analysts were expecting claims to jump almost 20,000 to 255,000. The weekly data tend to be volatile, particularly around year’s end.
The result continued a nearly two-week streak of initial claims for unemployment benefits below 300,000, which at 97 consecutive weeks is the longest since 1970. In the first week of 2016, claims were 280,000.
The less volatile moving average of the four weeks ended January 7 fell slightly to 256,500 comparted to the month ended December 31.

German economy grew by 1.9 per cent in 2016, strongest in five years

German economy grew by 1.9 per cent in 2016, strongest in five years

Thursday 1438/4/14 – 2017/01/12

Berlin, Rabi’II 14, 1438, January 12, 2017, SPA — The German economy grew by 1.9 per cent in 2016, the
Federal Statistics Office announced Thursday, posting the strongest
growth in five years for Europe’s largest economy, dpa reported.
German gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 1.7 per cent in 2015.
The data signals that Germany’s economy has rebounded from the shock of Britain’s vote to exit the European Union in June. GDP slowed to 0.2 per cent in the third quarter in the wake of the referendum. Analysts had predicted GDP growth of between 1.7 and 1.9 per cent.
The Federal Statistics Office also reported a fiscal surplus of 0.6 per cent of GDP in 2016.

Eurozone industrial output up strongly

LONDON, Rabi’II 14, 1438, January 12, 2017, SPA — Industrial production across the 19-country eurozone spiked by 1.5 percent in November from the month before, the latest in a series of indicators showing that economic growth across the region picked up momentum toward the end of 2016, AP reported.
The November rise follows a tepid 0.1 percent increase in October.
As a result, Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, says Thursday that industrial production in the year to November was up 3.2 percent compared with the 0.8 percent increase reported in October.
Encouragingly for the eurozone, the growth wasn’t due solely to Germany, the eurozone’s biggest economy. Ireland did particularly well with a massive 16.3 percent increase.
The figures are likely to cement market expectations that the eurozone grew at a faster tick in the fourth quarter.
