. Beginning with a press conference on November 28th, held at the Expo 2020 Dubai Media Centre, and ending with an event at the Terra Auditorium on November 29th, the introductory gatherings communicated Qatar?s vision for Expo 2023 Doha.

Over the course of history, the State of Qatar has proven its ability to reach great achievements by overcoming difficult challenges. In hosting the upcoming Expo 2023, the nation recognizes that climate, water, and soil are indispensable resources and endeavors to take pioneering steps in supporting a greener environment by holding the first Horticulture Expo in the Middle East and North Africa, a region dominated by a desert climate.

Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Khoori, Secretary General of Expo 2023 Doha, said: ?As the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to host a Horticulture Expo, we are honored to invite the world to come together in Doha as we seek new ways to collaborate and build a better and greener tomorrow. The forthcoming exhibition is expected to have a profound impact and leave a lasting legacy on Qatar, the wider region, and the world at large, as it places the emphasis on a mix of topics including green economies, sustainable lifestyles, education, entertainment, and innovation. Moreover, Expo 2023 will witness a local, regional, and international campaign developed to promote the unique event and encourage the world to visit the State of Qatar for an unforgettable experience made possible through Expo 2023 Doha.

At Expo 2020 Dubai, the press conference and event were held under the exhibition?s theme, ?Green Desert, Better Environment,? a slogan that aims to engage visitors and educate them about the role innovative solutions can play in the reduction of desertification. The wider theme includes four sub-themes that were developed to provide visitors with a unique experience that goes beyond pure information and inspires them physically, intellectually, and emotionally to be part of the change. The four sub-themes include: Modern Agriculture; Technology & Innovation; Environmental Awareness, and Sustainability. Hosting a year of sharing, learning, and celebrating around these four main concerns, Expo 2023 Doha is a global call to gather experiences, knowledge, science, technology, efforts, and people to plant the seeds of a greener and sustainable future.

During the press conference on November 28th, Mr. Mohammed Al Khoori spoke to the media about the details of the exhibition, highlighting how Expo 2023 Doha will serve the Middle East and North Africa region. In this context, Mr. Al Khoori indicated that the State of Qatar received the official bid to host the first international horticultural exhibition in the Middle East and North Africa in November 2019, after Qatar was distinguished for its multitude of activities and effective participation in a number of international horticultural exhibitions, the last of which was the Beijing Expo in 2019 where the Qatar Pavilion was among the three largest pavilions present at the exhibition.

The objectives of the Expo 2023 Doha reflect Qatar?s National Vision 2030, a roadmap for future development that aims to transform Qatar into an advanced country capable of sustaining its own development and providing a high standard of living for its population and future generations. Providing a framework within which national strategies and implementation plans can be instated, Qatar?s National Vision 2030 fosters the development of a future where people, society, economy, and environment are nurtured to achieve their potential.

Marking another milestone moment for the nation, the upcoming Expo reflects Qatar?s contribution to a fast-developing region through the hosting of international events including the Doha Asian Games in 2006 and the FIFA World Cup 2022. Expo 2023 Doha highlights Qatar?s pioneering role in driving forward sustainability practices by strengthening international cooperation as it relates to environmental issues and addressing the challenge of desertification.

The fundamental mission of Expo 2023 Doha is to introduce the latest technological solutions in horticulture by driving forward shared experiences that improve the quality of life in cities across the globe. The exhibition will be held under the joint auspices of the BIE (Bureau Internationale Des Exposition) and the AIPH (The International Association of Horticultural Producers).

Mr. Nasser Al Muhannadi, General Commissioner of the Qatar Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, said: ?We are honored to host the upcoming International Expo 2023 in Doha, and look forward to the promising opportunities in store. Qatar Affirms Middle East Nuclear Weapons Evacuation Contributes to Security, Stability

The State of Qatar affirmed that freeing the Middle East region of nuclear weapons contributes to achieving security and stability in the region, pointing to its contribution over the past four decades to official efforts and initiatives to free the Middle East region of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, noting its accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of nuclear weapons and other international treaties on weapons of mass destruction.

This came in a statement made by Vice-Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW) Abdulla Ibrahim Al Marzooqi, at the UN Second Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, which began its work in New York.

Al Marzooqi said that the first conference in 2019 represented a major turning point in joint efforts, under the umbrella of the United Nations, within the framework of holding an annual negotiating conference to develop a treaty to establish a zone free of these weapons in the Middle East, expressing the hope of the State of Qatar for continuous efforts until the establishment of the free zone.

Al Marzooqi expressed hope that the conference will yield the desired results, which necessitates working in a spirit of cooperation to complete the draft treaty and keep the issue open for discussion in the relevant international forums.

In this context, Al Marzooqi presented the proposals of the State of Qatar to form open-ended working groups to study and develop ideas on verification, control and inspection mechanisms, and to identify the elements of the treaty, the protocols to be attached, and other issues that require study and dialogue.

He pointed out the importance of forming an open-ended working group to study national needs and regional expertise required, and to consider setting up an intensive program to build national capacities to implement the commitments contained in such treaties. He called for coordinating work efforts between the two sessions to follow up on what is agreed upon at the conference, stressing the importance of the Presidency Conference submitting a report on the work of the conference, what needs to be accomplished, and the results achieved to the upcoming Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Conference of the States Parties (COSP) to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and the First Meeting of States Parties (1MSP) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), in order to gain support from these conferences and to keep the topic alive and up for discussion on their agendas.

Al Marzooqi also expressed the belief of the State of Qatar that the establishment of the free zone is the only initiative that deals with the issues of the proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, through a comprehensive regional approach to all countries in the region.

The Vice-Chairman said that the establishment of this free zone represents the cornerstone for building a regional security structure in the region, and one of the confidence-building measures between the concerned parties in the Middle East.

He reiterated the State of Qatar’s affirmation that it will continue to work within the framework of the United Nations, and will spare no effort in supporting the leadership of the conference towards fruitful discussions and results that achieve the interests of the region and the world and the desired results of the conference.
