French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the withdrawal of French forces from Niger with his Chadian counterpart, Mahamat Idriss Deby, who is visiting Paris.

A statement from the French presidency Thursday said that the two presidents discussed the process of withdrawing French military forces from Niger, which will primarily be carried out through N’Djamena by the end of this year. They also discussed the progress of the political transition in Chad, in addition to other regional issues.

France had decided to withdraw its 1,400 military personnel, along with their equipment equivalent to 2000 containers, primarily through Chad. The decision was made following the military coup that took place in Niger in July 2023.
