Manama, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Fawzia bint Abdulla Zainal, has affirmed that Bahrain’s 17-year-old parliamentary experience is rich and unique thanks to the unwavering support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, noting that the achievements of the Council of Representatives reflect the maturity of the Bahraini voters who have become aware of the importance of their effective participation in the elections, being a sacred national duty.

In an interview with the Bahrain News Agency (BNA) ahead of the new session of the Fifth Legislative Term, the speaker expressed pride in the Representatives Council’s achievements at the local and international levels, expressing satisfaction with the performance of lawmakers during the first session of this term.

She expressed hope that the second session will bring about more achievements that serve the nation and meet the citizens’ ambitions, in line with HM the King’s directives in this regard.

Speaking about her experience as the first woman speaker in the kingdom’s history, she affirmed that the support of HM King Hamad, the encouragement of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women, and cooperation of MPs have motivated her to succeed in carrying out her duties.

The speaker also paid tribute to her predecessor, Ahmed bin Ibrahim Al-Mulla, for the efforts he had exerted, along with outgoing MPs, in order to strengthen the pillars of Bahrain’s democratic experience.

She asserted that thanks to the support and care of HM the King and HRH Princess Sabeeka, Bahraini women have made giant strides in various fields, citing their success in winning voters’ confidence, as well as in reaching the highest positions and posts thanks to their distinguished skills and ability to assume their responsibilities, stressing that HM King Hamad’s era is the most prosperous for Bahraini women.

She voiced her deep pride in the success of female parliamentarians in carrying out their duties and defending the interests of the nation and the citizens, expressing happiness with the Bahraini women’s advancement in various fields.

Regarding her way of conducting the Representatives Council’s sessions, she said that she paves the way for all MPs to express their opinions freely, provided that they respect the constitution and the council’s bylaw.

Responding to a question about the Executive-Legislature relations, the speaker lauded the constant directives of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa to ministers and officials to always keep communication channels open with MPs regarding all issues aimed at achieving the citizens’ aspirations, noting that HRH Premier’s wise approach, keenness to receive lawmakers at his weekly Majlis and directives to ministers to respond positively to the demands of MPs, being the representatives of the people, have contributed to laying solid foundations for mutual trust and understanding between the two branches.

She affirmed that cooperation between the two branches, which, she said, is strongly supported by HRH the Prime Minister and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, has contributed to attaining numerous national accomplishments.

Concerning the twinning and partnership with the Shura Council, the speaker said that the two chambers of the National Assembly are cooperating and coordinating on everything aimed at achieving national interests, noting that two sides will launch many joint programmes.

Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, she indicated that the parliamentary delegation and the parliamentary friendship committees are carrying out their duties with great effectiveness, and have succeeded in highlighting the landmark achievements attained during HM the King’s prosperous era and refuting fallacies made against the kingdom.

On youth, she stressed that the Council of Representatives is committed to supporting youth, in line with the directives of HM the King in this regard, lauding the numerous achievements attained by Bahraini youth in various fields recently.

She commended the efforts exerted by HM the King’s Representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to support Bahraini youth, citing his recent initiative to build 100 stadiums across Bahrain’s neighbourhoods.

Concerning the council’s relations with the press and the media, she asserted that they are positive and strong as the ultimate goal of everyone is to serve the nation and the citizens.

On the role played by the Council of Representatives in the face of Iran’s continuous threats to the region’s security and stability, the speaker reiterated Bahrain’s firm stance in rejection of terrorism and interference in countries’ domestic affairs, stressing that the Representatives Council ‘condemns, rejects and denounces’ Iran’s terrorist practices, support for extremist militias, interference in neighbouring countries’ affairs and threats to navigation in international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz.

She urged the International Community to assume its responsibilities in facing Iran’s practices and focus on achieving security and stability in the region and the world.

Regarding Qatar, the speaker stressed that there is no problem with the brotherly Qatari people, noting that the main problem is with the Qatari regime that interferes in the affairs of other countries, including Bahrain, supports extremist and terrorist militias and uses its terrorist arms to destroy countries and fuel hatred and sedition among societies.

She expressed hope that the Qatari regime would come to its senses and respond positively to the demands put forward by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, as well as to take the good neighbourliness, brotherhood and kinship principles into account so that Qatar regain its Arab and GCC position.
