S. Korea’s Fiscal Deficit Narrows Year on Year

South Korea’s fiscal deficit narrowed on-year in the first seven months of 2023, data showed Thursday, as the government cut pandemic-related expenditures.

The managed fiscal balance, a key gauge of fiscal health calculated on a stricter term, posted a deficit of 67.9 trillion won ($51.1 billion) through July, compared with 86.8 trillion won tallied a year earlier, according to the Korean Ministry of Economy and Finance.

South Korea’s tax revenue came to 217.6 trillion won during the cited period, down 43.4 trillion won on-year due to a lower amount of income and corporate taxes collected, (Yonhap) News Agency reported.

The total revenue came to 353.4 trillion won in the January-July period, down 40.7 trillion won on-year.

Total expenditures came to 391.2 trillion won over the period, down 59.1 trillion won on-year, as the government spent less on pandemic-related projects.

The government’s debt had reached 1,097.8 trillion won as of July, up 14.5 trillion won on-year.

US Stocks End Mixed

Major US stock indexes closed mixed at the end of the trading session on Wednesday.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.12% to end the session at 4,467.44 points.

The Nasdaq gained 0.29% to 13,813.59 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.20% to 34,575.53 points.

Taibah University, Madinah, Receives Applications for Students Outside Kingdom

Taibah University in Madinah has announced that applications to study in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all students around the world are now open on the “Study in Saudi Arabia” platform.

According to the university, the submission of applications started today for 43 programs in eight colleges. It also said that applicants can view the admission requirements for free and paid scholarships, as well as the advantages provided to students on the registration platform in the following link:

Music Commission to Organize ‘Masterpieces of Saudi Music’ Concert in New York Next Sunday

Under the patronage of Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the Music Commission, with the participation of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, will perform a musical show next Sunday at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Square in New York City.

Eighty musicians from the National Orchestra and Choir (NOC) and the Saudi Performing Arts Band, accompanied by the American jazz band, Dizzy Gillespie, will perform the concert as part of the “Masterpieces of Saudi Music,” which includes a medley of Saudi folk songs in addition to individual performances. Dizzy Gillespie will present musical pieces in a joint performance with NOC.

The Theater and Performing Arts Commission will also present five shows that reflect the Kingdom’s cultural diversity, including Al-Majrour, and Al-Samari.

The concert at the Metropolitan Opera House is the third destination of the “Masterpieces of Saudi Music” initiative after performances in Paris and the U.S. state of New Mexico with the aim of introducing the world to the Saudi musical genres and performing arts.

Guinea Conakry’s Delegation Visits King Fahd Quran Printing Complex in Madinah

A delegation from Guinea-Conakry visited yesterday the King Fahd Quran Printing Complex in Madinah.

The delegation was briefed by Complex Secretary-General Atef Al-Olayan on the efforts made to serve the Holy Quran, including the processes of printing, translation into multiple languages and distribution to Muslims all around the world.

The delegation then toured the facilities of the complex and production lines and learned about the latest equipment and technologies used to print the Holy Quran, as well as the complex’s most prominent achievements.

Saudi-Djibouti Joint Security Committee Holds Third Meeting

The Joint Security Committee between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Djibouti held its third meeting Wednesday in Jeddah.

The Director General of the Border Guard, Major General Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Shehri, headed the Saudi side while the Secretary General of the Djibouti Ministry of Interior Serag Omar Abdel Qader chaired the Djiboutian side.

Al-Shehri conveyed the greetings of the Minister of Interior, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, and his wishes of success to the attendees.

The meeting discussed ways of continuing cooperation and exchanging experiences in the security field.

Verdict Enforcement Director-General attends INJAZ Bahrain ceremony

Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, has attended the ceremony of INJAZ Bahrain held annually to honour distinguished volunteers.

The event was held under the patronage of Her Higness Shaikha Hessa bint Khalifa al Al Khalifa, INJAZ Bahrain Chairperson.

Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid highlighted the importance of implementing the directives of Interior Minister, General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, to enforce the law and provide services and rehabilitation and training programmes to the beneficiaries in a way that contributes to achieving qualitative successes in the verdict enforcement process as well as subsequent follow-up.

He continued that the directorate had coordinated with various authorities for the best interests of the beneficiaries of the open prisons programme to enhance their skills and knowledge. He thanked INJAZ Bahrain for its supportive role in providing rehabilitation programmes for the beneficiaries of alternative sanctions and open prisons.

He stressed the importance of promoting community partnership through cooperation with NGOs.

Al-Ula World Archaeology Summit kicks off

The Al-Ula World Archaeology Summit, organised by the Royal Commission for AlUla at Maraya, kicked off today.

Over 300 government officials, heads of organisations concerned with archaeology and cultural heritage, and dozens of scientists and specialists from the Saudi Arabia and abroad are participating in the three-day event, aimed at realizing the Al-Ula vision goals that are in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.

The sessions addressed a number of diverse interactive and knowledge debates in the field of archaeology development and challenges, with the participation of several experts who spoke about four themes related to the “identity, ruinscapes, resilience and accessibility.”

The speakers focused on how archaeology can be developed to contribute to increasing archaeological discoveries.

Saudi Arabia’s inflation relatively stable in August

Saudi Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 2.0% in August 2023, down from July 2023, remaining relatively stable on a yearly basis.

According to SPA, this stability is due to the robustness of the Saudi economy and the early economic procedures and measures taken by Saudi Arabia to counter the global rise in inflation rates.

Inflation rates in Saudi Arabia remain stable compared to G20 countries and most countries worldwide.

In August 2023, the inflation rate showed relative stability at 2.0% compared to August 2022.

The CPI measures consumers’ prices for a fixed basket of goods and services consisting of 490 items. The respective prices are collected through field visits to points of sale.

Oil and Environment Minister inaugrates Fuel Farm in BIA

Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Dainah, the Oil and Environment Minister and the Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, today inaugurated the fuel farm project at the Bahrain International Airport (BIA).

The inauguration ceremony, held under the patronage of the minister, was attended by Bahrain Airport Jet Fuel Company (BAJFC) chairman Mark Thomas Group Chief Executive Officer of Bapco Energies, Mohamed Yousif AlBinfalah, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Chief Executive Officer and other officials from partner companies.

The minister affirmed that the current development in implementing economic projects contributed to achieving the objectives of the comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and reflected the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The minister welcomed the modernisation of services, oil facilities and infrastructure in BIA utilising advanced and efficient technology that is compliant with environmental standards and international health and safety measures.

The new project enhances Bahrain’s global position as a main hub for jet fuel services, the minister said, noting that the fuel farm was equipped with the latest technology, a network of underground pipelines and advanced storage facilities, which will contribute to operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact and offering world class services that target sustainable economic growth.

Dr. Bin Dainah said the project came to meet the increase in demand on jet fuel as the global aviation sector recovers its levels of activity following the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the 77,000 square metre fuel farm with a fuel capacity of 30,000 cubic metres, was expected to add value by streamlining jet fuel supply and maintenance operations in BIA.

On his part, BAJCF chairman said that the fuel farm project contributed to creating a sustainable foundation for the future of energy, commending the commitment of BIA to modernising its infrastructure and facilities in line with international standards.

Thomas highlighted the role of BAJCF in implementing the vision of Bapco Energies by conducting fuel supply operations on an international scale in a safe and effective manner while working on reducing carbon emissions and achieving environmental sustainability.

BAC’s CEO said the inauguration of the fuel farm and the hydrant system project underscored the importance of the strategic partnership with BAJCF, which positively impacts the development of infrastructure in BIA.

He added that the project cements the collaboration with industry-leading fuel suppliers such as Bapco, Air BP and Chevron who have been instrumental insupporting the airport’s efforts to meet the demands of its airlines partners and attract new operators to improve the serve the kingdom’s air connectivity.
