5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Papua New Guinea

Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.0 magnitude struck West New Britain Province in northeastern Papua New Guinea.

According to Qatar News Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 170 km from Kimbe town in the province, at a depth of 10 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage.

Papua New Guinea is located within the so-called Ring of Fire, a region along the Pacific coast known for its high levels of earthquake and volcanic activity. This area includes 90% of the world's active volcanoes. In February 2018, the country witnessed a devastating earthquake that killed at least 100 people and caused landslides that buried dozens of villages.
