An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck south of the Kermadec Islands, off the coast of New Zealand. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 1,000 kilometers northeast of New Zealand's North Island, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
