5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Maluku Region

Maluku: An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the Maluku region of Indonesia on Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred 116 km east of Maluku, at a depth of 181 km.

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific belt known as the Ring of Fire, where numerous tectonic plates converge, leading to regular volcanic and seismic activity.

In 2004, the region witnessed a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Aceh province, which triggered a tsunami and resulted in the deaths of more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
