Kabul: An earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit northeastern Afghanistan Wednesday morning.
According to Qatar News Agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said in a statement that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region in northeastern Afghanistan. The epicenter of the earthquake occurred 164 km east of Baghlan Province, which has a population of more than 100,000, and at a depth of 121 km.
There have been no reports of casualties or material damage caused by the earthquake so far. Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the intersection of Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
A series of earthquakes measuring up to 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Herat province in western Afghanistan in October 2023.
