Samangan: Six people were killed and 150 others injured when a powerful earthquake struck Samangan province in northern Afghanistan Sunday night, causing landslides and the closure of major highways. Local officials said rescue operations and the transfer of the injured to hospitals are ongoing, warning that the death toll could rise as more people arrive from remote areas.
According to Qatar News Agency, local authorities reported that a large landslide occurred in the Tashkurgan Valley, causing the closure of the Mazar-i-Sharif highway and hindering rescue efforts.
Frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan, made more deadly by fragile infrastructure and poor construction, continue to reveal the country's vulnerability to natural disasters amid a worsening humanitarian crisis and limited international aid.
