Algiers: The Algerian Coast Guard on Friday rescued 15 illegal immigrants from drowning in the Mediterranean Sea, north of the country. The Algerian Ministry of Defense reported that the Coast Guard units responded to a distress signal from the immigrants who found themselves in peril 27 miles northeast of Ras Djenet in Boumerdes province. The units dispatched two boats, successfully rescuing the 15 individuals who were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to Qatar News Agency, this incident follows a recent operation on December 25, where the Algerian Coast Guard thwarted attempts at illegal immigration. In that operation, seven individuals were rescued from traditionally made boats, and security forces apprehended 44 other immigrants of various nationalities. The coasts of North African countries have long served as a key launching point for illegal immigration attempts aimed at reaching European shores.
