Moscow: Expert at the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and political researcher on Middle Eastern affairs, Kirill Semenov, described the visit of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to Russia as a significant reflection of the strengthening relations between the two countries.
According to Qatar News Agency, Semenov noted that the visit comes during a complex period, with ongoing talks between the United States and Iran in Oman. He highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between Qatar and Russia as mediators in the U.S.-Iran crisis, owing to their aligned positions.
Semenov emphasized the visit’s importance in addressing the situation in the Gaza Strip, where Russian and Qatari perspectives align, and in discussing the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian crisis. He praised Qatar’s role in resolving conflicts and reuniting children affected by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict with their families, advocating for deeper Qatar-Russia relations.
The expert remarked on the potential for the Amir’s discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin to advance joint efforts on regional and international issues. He recalled past cooperation, such as the trilateral format between Qatar, Russia, and Turkey on Syria, and suggested reactivating the Astana Process for the Syrian issue.
On a regional level, Semenov described Qatar as a major power due to its influence and contributions to regional stability. He mentioned Qatar’s unique perspective on regional development and its independent foreign policy that maintains relations without compromising its positions.
Semenov concluded by stating that Qatar views its relationship with Russia as a cornerstone of its foreign policy, and Russia values Qatar as an essential regional player capable of helping shape Middle Eastern policies.
