Doha: Iraq called on the United States to reconsider its decision to suspend support for international organizations operating within its territory.
According to Qatar News Agency, during an emergency meeting chaired by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Iraq’s National Security Advisory and relevant ministries discussed the impact of the US funding cuts on UN programs in Iraq. The meeting was held in response to a letter from the UN Secretary-General to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, outlining gaps in services resulting from the funding adjustment. Officials warned that the decision could significantly affect aid and services provided to beneficiaries.
The discussions also addressed the implications of the US decision on Al-Amal Center and Al-Hawl refugee camp, as well as Iraqi families returning from northeastern Syria. Several measures were adopted to support the Ministry of Migration and Iraqi institutions working on this issue, ensuring the continued relocation and reintegration of families without disruption.
Additionally, Iraq reaffirmed that the international community shares responsibility for the second phase of addressing the file of ISIS, particularly in rehabilitating affected families. The government emphasized that this is a collective responsibility, not Iraq’s alone, and urged the US to reconsider its decision to suspend support for international organizations in the country.
