Carnegie Mellon Qatar Hosts “Reboot the Earth” Hackathon on Sustainability

Doha:Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar hosted the "Reboot the Earth" hackathon, a four-day event focused on sustainability and environmental innovation.

According to Qatar News Agency, the hackathon was led by the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It attracted 110 participants forming 22 teams, which included high school students, university students, and industry professionals from across Qatar.

The event centered on two main challenges: developing an AI solution to evaluate and recommend site and crop suitability, and creating an AI solution for cold-chain monitoring and food-loss reduction.

Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, emphasized the potential of hackathons to spark new ideas that could lead to significant advancements in technology and sustainability. Mithusa Kajendran from UN OICT highlighted the event as a platform for young innovators to address major global challenges, expressing optimism for a sustainable future driven by technological progress.
