China’s Fixed-asset Investment Falls 7.2% Amid Economic Challenges

Beijing: China's fixed-asset investment dropped 7.2% year-on-year in the first eight months of 2026, official data showed Tuesday. Investment during this period totaled approximately 29.3 trillion yuan ($4.33 trillion).

According to Qatar News Agency, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that excluding the property sector, the country's fixed-asset investment decreased by 4.2% in the first eight months of the year. Despite the overall decline, investment in intellectual property products increased by 9.2% year-on-year, indicating a shift in focus towards innovation and technology.

Investment in high-tech industries rose by 5.2% year-on-year. Specifically, the information service industry, aerospace and spacecraft manufacturing, and electronic and communication equipment manufacturing saw increases of 22.7%, 14.9%, and 6.9%, respectively, during the same period. These figures highlight a strong inclination towards developing high-tech capabilities.

By industry, the primary industry experienced a 2.4% year-on-year decrease in investment, the secondary industry saw a 2.9% decline, and the tertiary industry faced a 9.9% reduction. In terms of specific sectors, infrastructure investment declined by 4% year-on-year, manufacturing investment dipped by 2.3%, and real estate development investment fell significantly by 19.9%.
