Deadly Winter Storms Batter California

Doha: A series of powerful winter storms has swept across the US state of California, killing at least four people and causing widespread damage, authorities said. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in six counties, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange, allowing additional resources to be deployed and federal assistance requested.

According to Qatar News Agency, the deaths include a man in his 60s killed by a falling tree in San Diego, a woman swept away by large waves on the northern coast, and two people who died in weather-related vehicle incidents in northern California. Heavy rain and strong winds knocked out power to about 140,000 customers, with tens of thousands still without electricity. In the Sierra Nevada mountains, blizzard conditions have brought heavy snowfall and winds of up to 145km/h, prompting travel warnings.

Meteorologists have warned that further rain could trigger mudslides and debris flows, particularly in areas scarred by recent wildfires. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety advice as severe weather continues.
