EU Official: UN Convention on Law of Sea is Being Undermined Deliberately

New york: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that the current events in the Strait of Hormuz clearly demonstrate the need for a “strong international maritime security coalition.”

According to Qatar News Agency, Kallas, during her address to the UN Security Council session on cooperation between the United Nations and the European Union, emphasized the necessity of maintaining security at sea. She highlighted that the domain of maritime security has become increasingly contested. Whether discussing the Baltic, North or Red seas, the numerous straits, or the Indo-Pacific, Kallas warned that the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is being undermined deliberately.

Kallas further remarked that international cooperation at sea has not kept pace with the evolving threats in the domain, urging for urgent adaptation. She noted that there have been numerous criticisms against the United Nations, including the Security Council, for its failures in conflict resolution.

Highlighting the record use of the veto in 2024, Kallas suggested that the Security Council is struggling to address conflicts as they arise. She stated, “If the Security Council was functioning as it should, we would not be where we are today.” However, she remained optimistic, asserting that this is an opportunity for the UN to step up and demonstrate its capability to deliver.
