Doha:International Translation Day 2026 focuses on linguistic diversity and language rights, under the theme "The Power of Being Understood," emphasizing the role of translation in accessing essential services and information.
According to Qatar News Agency, Experts have noted that as technology and artificial intelligence transform the translation field, the future will depend on integrating these advancements while safeguarding language rights and maintaining the critical skills of translators. They argue that AI can enhance translation work but cannot replace the human judgment and cultural understanding required for precise translation.
Dr. Khalifa Abdullah Al Hazzaa from Qatar University emphasized the importance of preserving mother tongues and fostering environments where linguistic diversity thrives. He pointed out that translation is crucial not only for transferring meaning but also for linguistic development by introducing new terms and expressions.
Prof. Shokry Megahed from Ain Shams University discussed Arabic's position in the global knowledge landscape, noting disparities in investment and resources compared to other major languages. He stressed the need for stronger economic and institutional support for the translation profession and a coordinated effort to enhance Arabic's global presence.
Mowaffaq Faiq Tawfiq of Al Jazeera Media Network acknowledged AI's transformative effect on translation but highlighted the necessity of maintaining human oversight in decision-making processes. He pointed out that while AI is useful in gathering and processing information, it lacks the ability to interpret intent and non-verbal cues.
The observance of International Translation Day on September 30 recognizes the contributions of language professionals to global communication and understanding, with a history of celebration by the International Federation of Translators since 1991 and formal recognition by the United Nations in 2017.
