Doha: G7 foreign ministers on Tuesday issued a statement calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan, where the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) entered its third year. “We call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and urge both the SAF and the RSF to engage meaningfully in serious, constructive negotiations,” the G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America and the High Representative of the European Union said in the statement.
According to Qatar News Agency, they denounced the ongoing conflict, as the world marks two years since the beginning of the war. They expressed concern over what they described as “the world’s largest humanitarian crisis,” and condemned attacks on displaced persons’ camps and humanitarian workers.
The G7 called for the facilitation of humanitarian assistance delivery and the protection of aid workers. “As famine continues to spread across Sudan, G7 members are disturbed by reports of the use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and reiterate that such actions are prohibited under international humanitarian law,” the statement said.
