Geneva: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have expressed their support for the United Nations’ endeavors to incorporate human rights principles into national legislation and policies, as well as to aid in the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, the GCC is supportive of the UN’s assistance to countries in establishing national institutions dedicated to human rights protection.
According to Qatar News Agency, this announcement was made during a statement by Ambassador Nasser Al-Hain, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations in Geneva and Chair of the GCC Ambassadors’ Council. Al-Hain delivered the statement during a general debate on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report, which focused on technical assistance and capacity-building in human rights. The session also reviewed the report of the Yemeni National Commission of Inquiry on human rights violations in accordance with a Human Rights Council resolution.
Ambassador Al-Hain expressed the GCC’s approval of the 13th report released by the Yemeni National Independent Commission, acknowledging its collaboration with Yemen’s legitimate institutions in investigating human rights violations. He appealed to the international community to maintain their support for the Commission to ensure the completion of its work.
Furthermore, Al-Hain highlighted the efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman in reviving the political process in Yemen. He emphasized their aim to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable political resolution based on the GCC Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and UN Security Council Resolution 2216.
Ambassador Al-Hain reiterated the GCC’s dedication to humanitarian initiatives and urged active involvement in the upcoming Food Security Conference for Yemen, scheduled for October 27-28 at the GCC General Secretariat. He called on the international community to enhance their humanitarian and developmental assistance to the Yemeni people.
In addition, Al-Hain commended the efforts of Libya and Somalia, encouraging continued international technical support and capacity-building initiatives to bolster their human rights commitments.
