Doha: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) strongly condemned the Iranian attack on an Emirati tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement on Saturday, GCC Secretary General, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi condemned in the harshest terms the Iranian attack targeting a tanker belonging to ADNOC of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
This assault, Albudaiwi added, represents an escalation, as well as a threat to the security and safety of maritime navigation and international trade in one of the world's vital waterways.
Moreover, the GCC Secretary General stressed the rejection of any Iranian attempts to convert this international waterway into a tool for pressure and threats, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities and take a firm stance to stop these attacks, prevent their recurrence, and ensure the freedom and security of maritime navigation in accordance with the principles of international law, the law of the sea, and relevant international resolutions.
Concluding his statement, he reiterated the GCC's full solidarity with the UAE, standing by its side and supporting all measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty, property, and interests.
