GCC Secretary General Emphasizes GCC Principles Regarding Developments in Syria

Paris: Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi confirmed that the GCC countries have been and remain a primary supporter of the Syrian people, not only through the provision of urgent humanitarian relief but also in their commitment to a clear stance regarding the solution in Syria, which can only be through a genuine political transition that preserves its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and meets the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability, and a dignified life, in accordance with international references and relevant Security Council resolutions.

According to Qatar News Agency, this was stated during his speech at the Paris Conference on Syria, hosted by France. Albudaiwi emphasized the importance of safeguarding the dignity and sovereignty of the Syrian people and viewed the conference as a crucial step to enhance cooperation among partners.

The GCC Secretary General affirmed the GCC’s full readiness to work with the Syrian transitional government and international partners to build a safe and prosperous future for Syria. He reminded that the Council initiated its efforts early in the regime change events in Syria by holding an extraordinary ministerial meeting in Kuwait on December 26, 2024.

Albudaiwi stressed the importance of eliminating foreign interventions and chaos to build Syria’s future. He underscored the GCC’s commitment to Syria’s unity and sovereignty, rejecting any attempts to impose a new reality through violence or extremism.

He commended the Syrian transitional government’s steps to maintain civilian safety, achieve national reconciliation, and its decision to dissolve militias, contributing to security and stability.

Albudaiwi also condemned the repeated Israeli attacks on Syria, viewing them as violations of Syrian sovereignty. He highlighted that achieving stability requires empowering Syria economically, which includes lifting imposed sanctions.
