Germany announced the evacuation of approximately 60 German citizens by air from Niger following last week’s military coup against elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
The German Foreign Ministry stated in a statement today that the list of remaining German citizens in Niger includes embassy staff, military personnel, and a limited number of non-essential embassy employees.
The German government abandoned the organization of evacuation flights using military aircraft, and the evacuation was carried out on a French plane.
Several other countries have also begun evacuating their nationals from Niger in the aftermath of the military coup. France announced the completion of its evacuation of its citizens from Niger. The U.S. State Department announced the evacuation of some American employees working at its embassy in Niger and their families.
Italy confirmed the arrival of around a hundred people, including Italians, in Rome after their evacuation by authorities for security reasons. Additionally, the European Commission announced that around 500 people arrived in the French capital, Paris, aboard the first two evacuation flights from Niger’s capital, Niamey.
Last week, the coup leader in Niger, General Abdulrahman Chianji, announced the ousting of the country’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, and imposed border closures and a curfew before declaring himself as the ruler of the country.
