Doha: HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated the Second World Summit for Social Development at the Qatar National Convention Center on Tuesday morning. The event saw the attendance of Their Majesties, Highnesses, Excellencies, leaders of sisterly and friendly countries, heads of government, and participating delegations.

According to Qatar News Agency, HH the Amir was elected Chair of the Second World Summit for Social Development during the opening session. In his speech, he emphasized Qatar’s pride in hosting the summit, marking thirty years since the first summit in Copenhagen in 1995, and underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing economic and human development challenges that threaten social peace.

The Amir highlighted Qatar’s commitment to social development, noting its progress in human development, quality of life, education, economic empowerment, healthcare, family welfare, and social protection. The State of Qatar, through its Ministry of Social Development and Family, recently launched its 2025-2030 Strategy, under the theme ‘From Care to Empowerment,’ focusing on building a cohesive society founded on justice, equal opportunity, and human empowerment in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

On the international front, the Amir acknowledged that challenges like poverty, unemployment, and social inequality require collective efforts and effective solidarity. He emphasized Qatar’s strategic partnership with the United Nations and its commitment to supporting social development efforts globally through contributions and assistance from organizations like Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Charity.

The Amir also addressed the minimum measure of seriousness needed to tackle global challenges such as environmental issues, poverty, and human rights, citing the necessity of honoring commitments made in the Copenhagen Declaration. The Doha Declaration, adopted at the summit, is aimed at achieving social development and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Calling for peace and stability, the Amir highlighted the plight of the Palestinian people and urged the international community to support them against the consequences of Israeli aggression. He also condemned the atrocities in El Fasher, Darfur, advocating for an end to Sudan’s ongoing conflict and a political solution to ensure the country’s unity and sovereignty.

The opening ceremony was attended by HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, HE Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, several ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, members of delegations, and representatives of regional and international institutions and organizations.
