Brussels: The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) revealed today that 128 journalists were killed worldwide in 2025.
According to Qatar News Agency, the IFJ's report highlighted that more than half of these fatalities occurred in the Middle East. The federation expressed particular concern regarding the situation in the Palestinian territories, where reports indicate that 56 journalists lost their lives during the year. Other countries where journalists were killed include Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru, and India.
In addition to the fatalities, the IFJ expressed concern over the number of journalists imprisoned globally, which currently stands at 533. The federation's report underscores ongoing threats to press freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide.
The IFJ's annual report typically presents a higher death toll compared to Reporters Without Borders, which documented 67 journalist deaths in 2025. This discrepancy is attributed to differing methodologies, as the IFJ includes journalists who died in accidents, whereas UNESCO reported 93 journalist fatalities worldwide in 2025.
