The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Izu and Ogasawara islands shortly after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred in the in the Pacific Ocean. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in waters near Torishima in the Izu island chain in the Pacific, about 10 kilometers underground. The agency had predicted tsunami waves of up to 1 meter and called on the public to stay away from coastal areas. Japan is located at the meeting point of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to 100 active volcanoes.
