Japanese Shares Drop as Yen Strengthens Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Doha: Japanese shares fell sharply on Tuesday, as renewed geopolitical tensions dampened risk sentiment and a sudden surge in the yen weighed negatively on exporters.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Nikkei index fell 1.7 percent to 65,269.33 points at the close, while the broader Topix index declined 1.83 percent to 4,050.33 points. On the Topix, shares of glass makers and transportation equipment companies were the biggest decliners, falling 4.44 percent and 4.14 percent, respectively.

JTEKT was the benchmark index's biggest loser, falling 8.68 percent and recording its largest one-day decline since August 2024. Other significant declines included Alps Alpine, which fell 8.29 percent, and Okuma, which declined 7.99 percent.
