Lebanese President Condemns Attack on UNIFIL Convoy in Beirut

Beirut: Lebanese President Michel Aoun condemned the attack on a convoy of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Beirut, stating that the security forces will not tolerate any party attempting to destabilize the country or disrupt public peace.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement issued by his presidential office, President Aoun condemned the assault on the convoy of the Deputy Commander of UNIFIL as it passed on the road to Beirut Airport, emphasizing that the perpetrators will face punishment.

The Lebanese President called on the public to refrain from being swayed by suspicious calls that could lead to similar actions, stressing that expressing any stance must be done peacefully. He also confirmed that the security forces will carry out their duties to maintain order if reactions exceed the acceptable limits, especially if they pose a threat to the security and safety of citizens.

A UNIFIL convoy was attacked on Friday night while heading to Beirut Airport, resulting in the injury of the Deputy Commander, who was on his way home after completing his mission.

UNIFIL considered in a statement that attacks on peacekeeping forces represent a flagrant violation of international law, amounting to war crimes. It called on Lebanese authorities to conduct a thorough and immediate investigation and bring all those responsible for the attack to justice.

UNIFIL reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its mission to secure peace and stability in southern Lebanon, in accordance with the mandate set out by Security Council Resolution 1701.
