Beirut: Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun stated Monday that Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon target the US-brokered framework agreement and undermine efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. Following a meeting with French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, Aoun affirmed Lebanon's commitment to diplomacy and called on Israel to abide by the signed accord.
According to Qatar News Agency, Aoun condemned attacks on civilians, infrastructure, emergency responders, and places of worship as grave violations of international law. His remarks highlighted the severity of the situation and the potential threat to regional stability.
Aoun also supported renewing the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon's (UNIFIL) mandate, welcoming a French-Italian proposal for a European force should UNIFIL withdraw. This endorsement underscores Lebanon's desire for international collaboration to maintain peace and security.
He stressed that while Lebanon adheres to the agreement, Israel relies on unfounded pretexts to justify continued strikes. Aoun's statements reflect Lebanon's position on maintaining diplomatic channels while resisting actions that could escalate tensions further.
