Libya, UN Discuss Strengthening UN’s Role in Supporting a Consensual Solution

Tripoli: Vice-Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdullah Al Lafi, met Monday with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, to discuss the latest political developments and the obstacles hindering the implementation of national obligations in the country.

According to Qatar News Agency, during their meeting, the two sides also discussed mechanisms to strengthen the UN's role in supporting a consensual solution to end the current stalemate. Al Lafi stressed the necessity for UN efforts to be based on a purely Libyan national vision that preserves sovereignty, noting that the current phase requires clearer and more serious positions from political parties to revive consensus.

The meeting also addressed regional issues, the repercussions of the Sudanese crisis, and the transformations in the Sahel region on Libya's security. Al Lafi emphasized the need for more effective international coordination to protect stability. For her part, the UN envoy affirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting Libya and working with all national parties to secure a comprehensive and sustainable settlement that guarantees the country's unity and stability.

Libya was scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections in December 2021, but they were postponed indefinitely due to disagreements between political rivals.
