MoECC Champions Ecotourism Initiatives at Ras Abrouq

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) highlighted the significance of ecotourism in enhancing awareness of natural reserves in Qatar, promoting environmental consciousness, and supporting sustainable practices that aid in preserving biodiversity.

According to Qatar News Agency, the MoECC’s growing commitment to ecotourism is evidenced by its participation in the Ras Abrouq events, organized by Visit Qatar alongside various partners. Ras Abrouq, with its rich natural and cultural heritage, stands as a key local eco-tourism destination, reflecting Qatar’s vision of balancing tourism development with environmental conservation.

The reserve, a central site for wildlife relocation efforts, hosts numerous gazelles and oryx as part of Qatar’s drive towards sustainable development, aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030’s goals of harmonizing economic growth with environmental conservation. Ras Abrouq, designated as a natural reserve under Law No. (7) of 2005, is located within the Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, which is recognized under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program alongside 23 other global sites.

Head of the Ras Abrouq unit, Faisal Falah Al Rumaihi, noted that the reserve’s distinct terrain and scenic landscapes make it an exceptional destination combining natural beauty and authentic Qatari heritage, offering a unique experience for explorers and adventure seekers. He further emphasized that the Ministry’s Natural Reserves Department has developed a comprehensive plan to ensure environmental sustainability during events, monitoring tourism activities in coordination with relevant authorities to prevent adverse impacts.

The plan includes measures for waste management, noise reduction, and wildlife protection within the reserve. Al Rumaihi reiterated the Ministry’s focus on Ras Abrouq as one of Qatar’s vital natural reserves and mentioned ongoing efforts to maintain ecological balance and transform reserves into leading eco-tourism destinations by establishing sustainable facilities to support this tourism model.
