Doha: HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah met with HE Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif on the sidelines of the Second World Summit for Social Development held in Doha. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the NHRC and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), particularly in training, technical support, and enhancing national capacities.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Al Attiyah emphasized the NHRC’s dedication to fostering cooperation with the OHCHR. She highlighted the OHCHR’s commitment to building bridges of cooperation, which would facilitate the exchange of expertise and enhance capacities. This cooperation aligns with the OHCHR’s role in promoting and protecting human rights globally. HE Al Attiyah underscored the significance of continued constructive cooperation, especially on national priority issues impacting development and human rights.
The NHRC Chairperson also discussed the importance of exploring technical cooperation and capacity building, including training programs, technical support, and enhancing national expertise. These efforts aim to ensure the preparation of shadow reports and compliance with international obligations. She praised the United Nations Training Centre in Doha for its contributions to training various entities in collaboration with the NHRC.
HE Al Attiyah reaffirmed the NHRC’s commitment to supporting national efforts to integrate equality and non-discrimination principles into development policies. These principles are viewed as integral to the Committee’s vision of promoting human rights and ensuring justice and dignity for all individuals in Qatar. She expressed the NHRC’s eagerness to expand international cooperation, particularly with UN agencies, to enhance staff efficiency and facilitate expertise exchange with global human rights committees.
She also highlighted the NHRC’s progress in expanding international partnerships, which have significantly increased recently. HE Al Attiyah noted that hosting the Second World Summit for Social Development reflects the strong relationship between Qatar and the United Nations. She emphasized Qatar’s role in supporting social development globally and upholding human rights in various countries.
Furthermore, HE Al Attiyah pointed out that Qatar has set an exemplary model in social development, positively impacting the human rights situation in the country. Qatari institutions have developed pioneering models and are disseminating them through training and development programs in collaboration with international partners.
In a related development, HE Secretary-General of the NHRC Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali met with several officials on the sidelines of the summit. He held discussions with the Director of the Department of Organizations and Conferences at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saad Baroud, Advisor to the Syrian Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Dr. Raghadah Zeidan, HE President of the Arab-European Center for Human Rights and International Law, Counselor Ayhan Jaf, and a delegation from the Barzani Charity Foundation. These meetings focused on exploring avenues for bilateral cooperation in human rights.
